In Cresswell's The American Revolution in drawings and prints, he cites a similar mezzotint by C. Shepherd, #147, after a painting Thomlinson which was published during the early years of the Revolutionary War with the expectation that Lee would be a major player after his successes during the French and Indian War. Shepherd's mezzotint was later copied by J. M. Will in Augsburg and that copy is thought to be the basis of other portraits including this one. This portrait is most like the German copy shown in Cresswell, #148, that was published in Korn, Geschichte der Kriege, Nurnberg, 1778.
