Note
Written three years before La Galissonière's encounter with Byng, this letter has more social than marine content.
La Galissonière led the French navy in the attack on Minorca, which was then in British hands. He organized 12 ships of the line and 5 frigates and escorted the 176 transort ships carrying a 20-thousand man landing force. He cruised off Port Mahon, Minorca, and allowed the five British ships that were there to escape. On 18 May thirteen ships of the line and four frigates under Byng arrived. Though the battle was not a decisive one, Byng's withdrawl allowed La Galissonière to land without opposition. Minorca surrendered on 29 June, the event that resulted in Byng's court martial.
