This may be the stipple engraving by C. Watson (i.e. Caroline Watson?) after Stuart noted in the Oxford DNB account of Robert Boyd (vol.7, p. 46). See also Watson's entry in E. Benezit. Dictionnaire des peintres, sculpteurs, dessinateurs, et graveurs (vol. 10, p. 648).

On page 24 of the text of the "Trial" (on leaf 73v facing this portrait) Boyd is referred to as "late storekeeper of the ordnance at Minorca" before he testified at Byng's court martial. During his testimony, he expressed his opinion that the number of the garrison was much too small for the number of works to be defended. At the time of the trial, he served as aide-de-camp to Col. Charles Jeffries;He rose to the rank of lieutenant general of the 39th Foot and Lieutenant Governor of Gibraltar. (D. Pope. At twelve Mr. Byng was shot, p. 130)
