Note
Blakeney was the governor of Minorca who surrendered to the French after Byng's battle with the French fleet. Surrending under honorable terms, Blakeney's forcers were to be transported to Gibraltar and not made prisoners of war. Blakeney later gave inconclusive testimony at Byng's court martial.
Three-quarter portrait, a uniformed Blakeney stands on a fortress, possibly Minorca, torso facing to his left, head facing forward, his right hand holding a spy glass, his left resting on a canon. A sea battle rages in the background.
Laid in at leaf 72 of The Tragedy of Admiral Byng, 1756-1756.
A ms. note in pencil on the 2nd free endpaper: Added 2nd pg after p. 92 of trial. Mezzotint of Blakeney bought from Myers & Co Feb. 1920 [initialed] M[AA?], probably the compiler.
