Note
French version of Das Kriegs-Spiel. Based on a card game devised by Gilles de la Boissiere in late 17th century, this engraving illustrates many aspects of army life. The top panels give the rules of the game. The 52 numbered scenes also bear the usual designations of suit and number of a card game. The larger end panel, 53 (signed Ant. Dieu, Inv.), shows an audience with the King [Louis XIV] bestowing the marshal's staff [to Vauban?] The rules are given in text running along the top of the piece; including an alphabetical table of the terms used.
