Mostly in the form of an orderly book but is probably not an official one; it lacks the normal officer of the day and parole and countersign notations, and there are indications that it was maintained for Russell's personal use.
Connecticut troops in the division commanded by General Israel Putnam spent the winter of 1778-9 at Reading, near Danbury, Connecticut, mainly for recruiting purposes, while the main Continental Army was encamped in New Jersey.
Orders received from Washington's headquarters at Middlebrook, N.J. pertaining to recruiting and pay, copied; most content is local, including reporting procedures, supply, exhortation to duty, etc.
Most pages loose; several pages written out of order and some gaps; some pages blank, a few have some writing unrelated to Continental Army; at end blank leaves used for 92 p. of theatrical writing (Addison's Cato, a tragedy), probably by Russell.
Bound in leather backed boards.
