According to the bookseller's description, pasted below the letter, Maillebois distinguished himself at the siege of Mahon.
Recommending his nephew, M. de Laubépine, who has just come from the American war, and proposing the translation of a German work on military matters. (Bookseller's description) Ségur was Minister of War under Necker from 1780 to 1787.
In upper left, in a different hand and different ink, a note dated 17 Feb. 1783.
No French combatant named de Laubépine is listed in Les combattants francais de la guerre americaine 1778-1783 (1905)
