Note
Fox served as secretary of state, southern department in 1756 and as paymaster general in 1757. It was he, according to the "Trial", p. 4 (on the facing leaf), who "under the supposed intention of the French to attack the Island of Minorca," ordered 10 ships of the line to proceed to the Mediterranean under Byng's command.
