"In the spring of 1747, Byng sailed in the Superb to join Henry Medley in the task of suppressing French ambitions in Italy by blockading the Riviera coastline. When Medley died in August, Byng was promoted to commander-in-chief." (Bookseller's description)
"Being in want of carry on the contingent services of His Majesty's fleet under my command, I have this day drawn down on your Board for Two Hundred Thousand five hundred Pounds Sterling, payable to Giacomo Mastilona or his Order, which I desire you will be pleased to Accept and pay .... J. Byng"
