Note
Smith sat as president of the court martial that sentenced Byng. On page 3 of the "Trial of the honourable Admiral John Byng" (leaf 19 of The Tragedy), he is listed as Vice-Admiral of the Red.
3/4 length mezzotint port., facing slightly to his left, holding a spy glass in his left hand; a naval scene in the background.
Probably engraved between 1748, when he was named Vice-Admiral of the White and 1757, when Smith was appointed Admiral of the Blue in February of that year. The Oxford DNB reports his promotion to Vice Admiral occurred in 1748; that promotion may have been the impetus for this portrait.
Slightly damaged at lower right corner, affecting date, which may be 1746.
On leaf 17v of The Tragedy of Admiral Byng, 1756-1757
