A collection of somewhat chronologically arranged printed articles, broadsides, caricatures, maps, and manuscript documents relating to the career, trial, and execution of Admiral John Byng.
Contents: More than 11 letterpress items, including the text of the trial, leaves separated and inserted chronologically among other items -- 14 mss. (letters from Byn and from his adversary at Minorca, the Marquis de La Galissionière; Byng's will dated 2 days before his death; a letter from King Louis XIV -- 55 portraits of Byng and other 18th-century political, judicial, and naval figures -- 58 caricatures, satirical prints, and other engraved broadsides -- 41 maps and views.
"In principle, this volume was apparently originally intended as an extra-illustrated copy of The Trial of the honourable Admiral John Byng : London: Printed for R. Manby [and others], 1757. In practice, as the list of the contents shows, it is a comprehensive account in words and pictures of one of the causes celebres of the mid-18th century -- a scandal which has never really died away and which still finds its partisans on either side almost 250 years later." -- Christopher Edwards, bookseller.

Bookplate (dated 1902) of the historian Alexander Meyrick Broadley of The Knapp, Bradpole. A pencilled note on leaf [1] which may be in his hand states that the mezzotint of Blakeney (item 41 in the bookseller's catalog in the case file) "bought from Myers, was added in Feb. 1920."
Bound ca. 1900 in blue half morocco; spine richly gilt and lettered; maroon endpapers; top edge gilt.
