Full-figure, as a young man, seated in a chair with his legs crossed, to the left. He holds an open book in his right hand and his left hand is braced on the arm of the chair. Two additional books are on the floor near the left leg of the chair and his dog stands to the left of the chair in the lower right hand corner. The background is of the interior of a house with bookcases behind the chair and the countryside with a boat sailing on a small stream seen through the window. Rectangular stipple and line engraving, published in 1858.
Below the title it reads: "From a drawing in the possession [1842] of Sir Alexander Johnston"
