Maria was the second illegitimate daughter of Sir Edward Walpole and Dorothy Clements making her Horace Walpole's niece. He arranged her marriage to James Waldegrave, the second earl of Waldegrave, 1715-1763. After his death, she married William Henry, Prince, first duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh, 1743-1805, the younger brother of George III.
