Lafayette wrote his name in different ways, according to historical circumstances. In this letter he says that he has seen the list of electors [voters] and observes that many names have been omitted, others printed incorrectly. M. Gibert has corrected these errors, but "as regards to me personally, I take pride in seeing that my friends see my name correctly written, and I would like to have a copy of the letter from Mon. le Maire when the requested correction has been made ... I repeat here for him my name. Lafayette (Marie Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Mottier) formerly General. The title of General Lafayette is, as is known, the only one that I have taken."
