The opening salutation, "My respected friend" is hidden behind the mat.--Cf. Laurens papers, v. 16. Lafayette regrets missing Laurens on two occasions but hopes to be more successful on his return from the country. It is signed: Lafayette and below the signature is "Thursday." This was probably April 17, 1783, near the time of Laurens' arrival in Paris.
Framed along with the letter is the address: To Henry Laurens at the Hotel d'York, Paris.
