Two portraits, side by side of George and Martha Washington. George Washington: Head and shoulders, torso to the right, head to the left, in uniform. Oval in a frame. Rectangle. Martha Washington: Head and shoulders to the right, seated in a chair, wearing a lace cap. Oval in a frame. Rectangle. In both cases, the title is a facsimilie signature. Below the signature it reads: "From the original painting by Rembrandt Peale, never before engraved."
The Washington portrait is referred to as the George Washington Copy. Painted and signed by Rembrandt Peale in 1855, it is now owned by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania from the Pennsylvania Sons of the Revolution. The Martha Washington portrait was painted by Rembrandt Peale in 1856 but copied from a portrait originally painted by his father, C. W. Peale in 1795. It also is owned by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania.
