Note
Three quarter length, standing to the right, in uniform. Right hand rests on a cannon and the left hand is on his waist, holding his hat. Dark sky in the background and the head of a horse is seen to the far left. Rectangle. Below the title it reads: "From painting by C. W. Peale in possession of Miss J. J. Boudinot, Bernardsville, N. J."
This is one of the "blue sash" portraits, signed by Peale in 1780. Its earliest owner was Elias Bondinot. Later owned by Miss J. J. Boudinot, Bernardsville, New Jersey. She left it to her nephew, Boudinot Keith, with the provision that upon his death, it should go to the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association. The portrait is now at Mount Vernon, Virginia.
