Statue of Washington, commissioned by Gov. William Miller for the State of North Carolina and placed at the state house in Raleigh in 1824. It was distroyed in a fire on June 12, 1831. It depicts Washington, seated on a chair to the right, as a Roman lawgiver, in a Roman "toga", engraving laws on a huge stone slab held in his left hand and resting on his left knee with a stylus raised in his right hand. Washington's likeness is based on a life study of Canova's friend, Giuseppe Ceracchi and does not resemble Washington.
This is the front or folio engraving by Bertini. The artists' names appear below the base of the statue. The title appears below the statue. Below the title on the right it reads: "Antonio Canova D. D. D." At the lower left it states: "Statua in marme alguanto maggiere del naturale destinata ad user pesta nello sole del Senate di Carolina in America."
This copy is a photograph of the original engraving that has been mounted in an artist's black frame. A copy of the original engraving, with plate marks, is filed as P&E L1995F228f.

Reportedly, a poor quality copy of this engraving at one time hung in the Pennsylvania room at Mount Vernon, but is probably no longer on display.
