An illustration of the equestrian statue of Washington by Henry Kirke Brown as it stood in Union Square, New York in 1856. Rectangle.
After the authors name below the lithograph, it states, "for D. T. Valentine's Manual, for 1857." David Thomas Valentine was the Clerk of the Council of the City of New York, and pursuant to a legislative resolution, began publishing the Manual of the Corporation of the City of New York in 1841 and annually thereafter until 1867. The manual was a compilation of illustrations and historical information about the city. This lithograph was commissioned for the edition of the Manual that was published in 1857.
