Birch's glove is also on the floor and he appears to have just arrived with a pouch of letters on his shoulder. Rectangle. Below the title in the lower right it reads: "Printed by J. M. Butler."

The spy is named Harvey Birch, and the book is thought to be based on the life of David Gray of Massachusetts, who served as a spy during the Revolution currying letters for the British and reported from time to time to Washington.
