Note
Bust, head to the left, in uniform. Circle. He wears the eagal of the Society of the Cincinnati, the Ordre of St. Louis, and the Legion of Honor on his left shoulder.
This appears to be a photomechanical reproduction of a painted portrait.
On the back of this print it is written: "Contra-Amiral Baron de NERVO 16/9/1765-30/10/1835."
The individual in this portrait appears to be a member of the Society of the Cincinnait by virtue of the fact that he is wearing the eagle of the Society, but no record of his membership can be found in either Metcalf or in the French Society records of original members, or honorary members. It appears that Contre-Amiral M. le Baron de Nervo was among a group of officers on board the ITlIustra in Boston Harbor when President Washington visited in November 1789. President Washington wished to honor the French naval officers at the time of the adoption of the new Constitution of the United States with honorary membership in the Society of the Cincinnati. He authorized the staff to wear the eagle of the Society and wrote to Count d'Estaing asking him to present them with certificates of membership. Because the ship was late in arriving back in France and the French Revolution intervened, the honorary memberships were never officially bestowed.
