Portrait of George Washington, bust to the left, oval with border 1/16, surrounded by a pedestal with laural leaves and to each side, two ladies stand with arms raised to complete the oval, one holding a sword, the other a sheath of grain. Four flags of the United states are in the background behind the ladies, and the Washington Monument rises behind the portrait with rays. A pointed cross bar extends to either side of the portrait with the words " Washington Monument." Above the portrait it reads: "Ceremonies on the Completion of the." Below the portrait it reads: Capitol, Washington, D.C. Jan.y 14th 1885. The commission appointed under the Joint Resolution of Congress approved May 13th 1884, in relation to ceremonies to be authorized at the dedication of the Washington Monument requests the pleasure of your attendance at these ceremonies to be held in the City of Washington, D.C. on February 21, 1885. Signed by John Sherman, chairman of the commission. Below are printed the named of the members of the commission along with the engineer of the monument.

A second copy, printed on card stock is apparently a sample, since it is not addressed to anyone.
