Title
[General Zackary Taylor] [print]
Description
1 photomechanical print ; on sheet 15 x 12 cm.
Call Number
P&E L2003D331m
Note
Half-figure, torso to the left, head in profile to the left, in uniform. He holds a spyglass in his left hand. In the lower left corner are three soldiers on horseback and a tent. Rectangle. This copy has been cropped at the border so there is no title.
On the back has been written in ink: "Owned by Aunt Betty (Mrs. Dandridge of Winchester, VA)." [thought to be Taylor's daughter, Betty Taylor] Below is reads in pencil: "Contemporary engraving of General Zachary Taylor." At the bottom in another hand is written in pencil: "Entered in Book of Family Portraits. Mus. #639."
Rather than an engraving, this appears to be a photomechanical print of a painting. It is printed on manilla bond paper, backed by blue construction paper and backed again by another sheet of manilla bond paper on which the notes are written. It is possible that this is a copy of the painting of Zachery Taylor by Joseph Horace Eaton (1836-1896), a West Point graduate who became an aide to Taylor during the Mexican War and painted Taylor's portrait.
This print is the gift of Kenneth Trist Urquhart of the Virginia Society. He states that he got it from the estate of his cousin, Trist Ward, of New Orleans, a descendant of Taylor. See case file.
Zachary Taylor was made an honorary member of the Society of the Cincinnati from the state of New York in 1847.
