Full figure, standing, facing slightly to the left, in uniform. His right hand is tucked in his waistcoat and his left hand, holding his hat, rests on his hip. The tents of an encampment are shown in the background. Rectangle. The title is a facsimilie signature.
This is a photomechanical reproduction of an oil painting and is similiar to the illustration that appears in the Pennsylvania magazine of history and biography, vol. 22, 1898, page 265. However, the copy in the magazine is on a longer sheet and has the following information printed below the title: "From the original picture painted by Charles Willson Peale in 1784, now owned by General Stewart's Great-Grandson, John B. Church, Esq., Geneva, New York."

Walter Stewart was an original member of the Society of the Cincinnat from the state of Pennsylvania.
