Head and shoulders in profile to the right. A lightly colored border 2/16 is seen on the sheet beyond the plate mark.
On the frame backing it reads: "Lt. James R. Caldwell, U. S. N.. Not Soc. Member. Mus #186-E." This portrait was transferred to the Library from the 2nd floor Museum vault in April 2000.
Date and location from Miles.
James Caldwell began his career as a midshipman; he was a Lieutenant on the frigate Siren when he was killed in action in Tripoli in August 1804.
