Three-quarter figure, seated, facing left. He holds a book on his knee with his left hand and holds his glasses in his right hand which rests on his lap. The eagle of the Society of the Cincinnati with large rose ribbon, hangs on his left lapel. Under the title is a facsimilie signature. Rectangle.
This is a illustration from Herring and Longacre's The national portrait gallery of distinguished Americans, Vol. III.
The copy on the mat board was removed from its frame for preservation in the P&E files in the vault. This copy was orginally accessioned as Mus. #822 and later accessioned in the library as L93.838.
The copy on sheet 24 x 15 cm. was originally accessioned as L77.1.457.5
Morgan Lewis was an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati from the state of New York. He was president of the New York Society from 1832 until his death in 1844 and the Sixth President General of the General Society from 1839 untile 1844.
