Line drawing of an ornate urn with an eagle and stars along with decorative leaves and flowers and handles featuring heads of Greek gods of the sea. Mounted on a pedestal with legs. On the pedestal, a plaque reads: "Presented by the Midshipmen of the U.S.Frigate Brandywine as a testimonial of individual esteem and collective admiration a tribute to the private worth and public excellence of General Lafayette."
This drawing refers to the fact that the U.S. Frigate Brandywine took Lafayette and his family back to France after their final visit to the United States in 1824-25. A description of the voyage appears in "Lafayette in the Frigate Brandywine" by Captain Edgar K. Thompson, U.S.N. (Ret.) published in The American Neptune, Vol. 26, No. 4 (1966), p. 258 (see 387.05 A 512 v.26 #4). This article does not mention a presentation of an urn, but does indicate that upon arrival in France, Lafayette, when asked what he wanted as a memento of the trip, requested that he be given the American flag that flew from the ship. This gift of the flag is thought to be the last gift presented to Lafayette from the United States.
