The war was practically over in Dec. 1781. However, Greene kept his army together before Charleston as the British did not evacuate the town until Dec. 14, 1782. He was obliged to pledge most of his personal fortune, and he became involved with a contractor, John Banks, whose paper he had to endorse personally to keep the army from starvation. This document explains the circumstances of Greene's decision to incur this indebtedness, and the complex financial and accounting transactions that ensued.
