Full figure, seated, with legs crossed, in a chair to the right. His walking stick rests across his knee. He holds a manuscript in his lap. His hat and a map of Pennsylvania rest against the right leg of the chair and a large book can be seen to the right of the chair among a drapery. A table is seen to the left rear and appears to hold a tray with a pipe. A Benjamin West type. The title is a facsimilie signature.
This is a copy of the illustration in Schroder's, Life and Times of Washington, Vol I, between pages 462-463, the 1847 edition published by Johnson, Fry & Co. This same engraving also appears in Duyckinck's, National portrait gallery of eminent Americans, Vol. I.
Benjamin Franklin was made a honorary member of the Society of the Cincinnati by the state of Pennsylvania in 1789.
