Full length, standing to the right, in his judicial robes. He holds a paper in his right hand, and his left hand rests on a stack of books on a table to his left. Title is facsimilie signature and below the title it reads: "From the original painting by Chappel in the possession of the publishers."

Ellsworth was the Third Chief Justice of the United States, taking office in 1796 until his death in 1807.
