Full figure, seated to the right at a table with a map, in uniform. His hat and some paper are lying on the floor next to the chair. Additional papers, a pen in an ink bottle, and a book appear on the table. Title is a facsimilie signature. Below the signature it reads: "Likeness from a recent photograph from life."
This is an illustration from Duyckinck's National portrait gallery of eminant Americans, Vol. II, between pages 482 and 483, where he is incorrectly identified at Thomas Francis DuPont.
Samuel DuPont was a naval hero at the time of the Cival War.
