Note
Half length, standing, to the left, in uniform. The eagle of the Society of the Cincinati hangs from his left lapel. His right hand rests on his sword in front of him, and he holds his hat in his left hand which rests atop his right hand. Gilbert Stuart is both the artist and engraver.
Below the title on the engraved copy it states: "Original by G. Stuart in the possession of Matthew Clarkson.. 1793-4 AEt.35."
The engraved copy is from Schuyler and in the Thomas Collection.
The photomechanical print of the engraving is a page from the Daughters of the Cincinnati 1910-1911 Yearbook after page 20 and has only has Clarkson's name printed as a title, without reference to the artist.
Matthew Clarkson was an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati from the state of New York.
Below the title on the engraved copy it states: "Original by G. Stuart in the possession of Matthew Clarkson.. 1793-4 AEt.35."
