During the War of Jenkin's Ear (1739-43), the British attempted a naval assault on Cartagena, a fortified Spanish port in Colombia. During the attack, Vernon began to argue with General Wentworth and other leaders of the expedition. His attack proved unsuccessful after three months and the British were forced to withdraw.
