Photograph of a painted portrait of Berrien as a young soldier. Half length, seated, to the right, in uniform. The Eagle of the Society of the Cincinnati is hanging from a ribbon on his left lapel. The original painting is shown in poor condition with cracking paint and faded features.
On the verso of the mat board is written: "Major John Berrien - original member of the Society of the Cincinnati in the State of Georgia wearing the Eagle of the Society of the Cincinnati which Genl. George Washington presented to him on his visit to Savannah, Ga. in 1791. Major Berrien was born at 'Rock Hall' - the Berrien house. Where Genl. Washington wrote his farewell address. Major Berrien was in the Ga. Continental Line."
John Berrien was an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati from the state of Georgia.
