This is a print, detailed after a painting by Wilford S. Conrow, which is a mural on the walls of the headquarters of the George Washington Life Ins.Co. in Charleston, W. Va. The original painting is full-figure, but this print is cropped to three-quarter length. Washington is standing to the left, in uniform, with left hand on the hilt of his sword, and right hand holding a scroll, symbolic of the future Constitution. The face and head were modeled after the Houdon clay bust at Mount Vernon, and the uniform after one now preserved among Washington's personal effects at the Smithsonian.
The print is shown on sheet with pencil sketched mat on which the title "Where there is no Vision, the People perish." appears. At the base of the painting on the left is the copyright of the George Washington Life Ins.Co., and on the right, the statement, "detail after painting by Wilford S. Conrow." Below the mat is an original pencil signature of the artist. Centered at the bottom of the sheet is an embossed ensignia of the Sons of the Revolution.
