Note
Full bust to the left, in uniform. The Ordre of St. Louis and the eagle of the Society of the Cincinnati are pinned to his left lapel. Vignette.
The black and white copy of this engraving is affixed to the inside left side of a red leather lettercase. The front center of the lettercase cover has a gold letter "L" with a crown above. The gold scrolling on the inside of the lettercase form a frame for the engraving. When acquired by the Society of the Cincinnati, the lettercase contained a letter of introduction for Captain Allyn to Lafayette's friend William Roscoe. The letter is filed in the library's manuscript collection as MSS 49.
A second, handcolored copy was removed from its frame for preservation in the P&E files in the vault. It was originally accessioned as P&E L1991.242.11 and was a gift of Mrs. Lester Gayle.
Lafayette was an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati from France.
