Note
George Washington and his officers huddle in the Fort to listen to the terms of his surrender to the French being translated by Van Braam, who had been selected to be the intermediary with DeVillier. Two Indians stand in the background and two soldiers man a cannon on the right of the picture. Fort Necessity, at Great Meadows, PA., was built under Washington's leadership during the French and Indian War.
Below the title it reads: "(From the original drawing in the possession at the publishers)" It also states: "Vol 1 p.135", indicating that this is an illustration from a book. To the right of the title, "Printed by W. Pate."
