On one copy, the title, John Paterson, has been printed in script. Below the title, someone has typed the following: "Brigadier General John Paterson, Cont. Army, From the effigy on the monument at Freehold, New Jersey. Presented by his g.g.g.grandson, Caldwell, Woodruff, M. D."
On the second copy, the image is reduced and the title is a facsimilie signature including the rank, M. Gen.l.
This engraving appears as the frontispiece in the book, The life of John Paterson Major-General in the revolutionary army, by Thomas Egleston. On that copy, below the title signature it reads: "General Paterson from the Monmouth Battle Monument at Freehold, New Jersey."

John Paterson was an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati from the state of Massachusetts. In addition, he commanded West Point in 1780 and served in the U.S.Congress from 1803-1805.
