Gates asks to be excused from the meeting of the Society due to his constant travel. Agrees to comply with 4 dollar membership fee. (Gates was at this time President of the Virginia Society and Vice President General of the General Society)
Gates was the leader of American troops at the Battle of Saratoga. See case file for further biography.

Minor paper loss due to wax seal.
On p. [4] "post paid 1-8... Col. Towles... To the Order of The Cincinnati... Fredericksburg in Virginia... Horatio Gates Esq... 5th Nov. 1786.... escusing his nonattendance... this Letter came to hand too late to wit abt. 26 Novr. 86." (Col. Towles was Secretary of the Virginia Society)
