This is a reproduction of either the original miniature painting by Trumbull which is in the possession of the New York State Historical Society, or the copy of the miniature by Mr. Edgar Browne Smith which was presented to the U. S. District Court for the Southern District of New York in 1913 by the New York Society of the Cincinnati.
There are five copies on full sheets with one that has "From Mr. M. Clarkson" written at the bottom. A sixth copy cut down to sheet 13 x 10 cm. with the title handwritten and indicate that the portrait is a miniature and the print was owned by William G. Thompson.
John Laurance (spelled Lawrence in Metcaff) was an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati from the state of New York.
