Note
A commerative set of photographs from an exhibit of prints and watercolors from the naval collection of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, that were displayed at the National Archives in Washington D.C. in 1962. Portfolio I, deals with the United States Navy from the period of the Revolutionary War through the War of 1812. It includes the following engravings:
1) The memorable engagement of Capt.n Pearson of the SERAPIS with Paul Jones of the Bon Homme Richard & his Squadron, Sep. 23, 1779. Hand colored line engraving.
2) Paul Jones American, Capitaine Commandant la Frigatte l'Alliance Celere par son intrepidite dans les combats. Hand colored line engraving.
3) A view of the American Merchant ship Planter beating off a French National Privateer of 22 guns, July 10th 1799. Hand colored aquatint.
4) A perspective view of the loss of the U.S.Frigate Philadelphia in which is represented her relative position to the Tripolitan gun-boats when during their furious attack upon her she was unable to get a single gun to bear upon them. Hand colored line engraving.
5) A view of Commodore Preble's squadron whilst engaging the gun-boats and forts of Tripoli on the 3rd of August 1804 when they captured three of the Tripolitan gun-boats & greatly damag'd the Bashaw's fortifications. Hand colored line engraving.
6) Blowing up of the fire ship Intrepid commanded by Capt. Somers in the Harbour of Tripoli on the night of the 4th Sept.1804. Hand colored line engraving.
7) Prise du feu au Vaisseau Anglais, dans le combat navale. (View of action between the United States and the Macedonian) Hand colored line engraving.
