Note
Three-quarter length, standing, to the left. Her arms are crossed at the waist and she is holding a floral bouquet in her left hand. A ribbon is tied around her long, curly hair. Background suggests a classical piller to the right and a drapery to the left. She was 18 at the time the original portrait was painted.
Below the title it reads: "From an original picture by John Trumbull in the Trumbull Gallery, Yale College, New Haven.
Harriet Chew was one of the two daughters of Benjamin Chew, Chief Justice of Pennsylvania. They were favorites of George Washington. Harriet married Charles Carroll, Jr., son of Charles Carroll, Senator from Maryland and Member of the Committee on Arrangements for Washington's Inaugural.
