Note
Three-quarter length, to the right, seated in a high back chair. Her left arm is bent at the elbow, and rests on a table with the hand just below the chin. She wears a bracelet of pearls. The right arm rests against the chair and she holds a small book in that hand.
Below the title it reads: "From an original picture by Gilbert Stuart in possession of Joshua Francis Fisher, Esq. of Philadelphia."
By some accounts, Anne Willing Bingham, was at the top of the social scene in Philadelphia during the Washington presidency. Her husband was a Senator, and she traveled extensively abroad. She was a particular favorite of the John Adams family and a personal friend of their daughter.
