Below the title it reads: "From an original picture in possession of John C. Mongomery, Esq., Philidelphia."
Mrs. Philips was one of the daughters of Benjamin Chew. They were favorites of George Washington. Sophia married into the Philips family, who were part of New York social scene during the Washington administration.
