Full length, facing front, head slightly to the left, in uniform, holding his hat in his right hand, standing on the shoreline at the fort on Sullivan's Island, South Carolina, which which bears his name. Two soldiers, from the 2nd South Carolina regiment appear to the left in the background on a cannon. Boats can be seen in the harbor in the distance.
Below the facsimilie signature title, "From the original painting by Chappel in the possession of the publishers." The painting is based on the likeness in Edward Scriven's engraving from a portrait by Trumbull
This engraving appears in Duyckinck, National Portrait Gallery of Eminent Americans, page 97.
There are two copies of the engraving, one on a slightly larger sheet that has been removed from a book with the binding holes showing. The slightly smaller sheet may have been cut from a book.
There is a black & white glossy photograph of the engraving with the title not included. The image has been enlarged to fit the sheet.
Major General William Moultrie was an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati from the state of South Carolina. He also served as Governor of South Carolina
