Note
Abbot was an 1854 graduate of West Point, a Civil War veteran, brevet Lieutenant in the Corps of Topographical Engineers, and retired as Colonel of the Corps of Engineers in 1895. In 1874, he was appointed member of a commission to report a plan for the reclamation of the alluvial basin of the Mississippi, and in 1895 a member of the Endicott Board studying the defence of the coast of the U.S. He was commandant of the U.S. Engineer School of Application , Willets Point until 1886 and was a member of the Permanent Board of Engineers and of the Board of Ordnance and Fortification, 1888-1895. After retirement, he was a member of the International Commission of Engineers appointed to advise the Panama Canal Company. For complete career summary, see folder 5.115-.116.
Henry Larcom Abbot was an hereditary member of the Society who represented Nathan Hale.
Folder 4: Programs and menus (e.g. Triennial banquet given by the South Carolina Society, 1908 which includes watercolor sketches by Lieut. Henry Gray of the Battle of Sullivan's Island, 1776; program for the presentation of a portrait of John Lawrance, 1913) as well as corresondence between Abbot and Bryce Metcalf.
Folder 5 contains a letterbook of more than 175 items containing correspondence, clippings, and memorabilia relating to Abbot's membership in the Connecticut Society, including the Hale genealogy (.11); a monument to Lafayette (.67); the centennial of Washington's death (.68); Joseph Hale's service (.11 and .76); biographical notices of George Bliss Sanford (.164-.172). Includes index.
Folder 6 contains a scrapbook of government documents, clippings, and other memorabilia concerning the life and service of Nathan Hale, including a pamphlet by George Dudley Seymour, "The familiar Hale: An attempt to show by what standards of age, appearance and character the proposed statue to Nathan Hale for the campus of Yale College should be judged" (1907)
Folder 7: published "Genealogy of the family of Capt. Nathan Hale by Rev. Edward E. Hale"
Folder 8 consists of 4 loose documents plus 1 bound volume of Abbot genealogy.
Folder 9 contains copies of three commissions of Abiel Abbot: .1 as captain, 95h company, 6th regiment of militia in His Majesty's province of New Hampshire, Feb. 16, 1769; .2 as second major , 5th regiment of militia, Dec. 11, 1776; .3 as first major, 5th regiment of militia, March 30, 1781. Also, copies of 2 commisions of Ezra Abbot: .4 as lieutenant of the 7th company in the 22nd regiment of militia in New Hampshire, June 21, 1797; .5 as captain of same, June 16, 1801; .6 a letter of June 15, 1916 to Gen. Abbot, concerning the copies. Not present, though inventoried on accompanying envelope, a resignation dated April 22, 1805.
