Placed in command of the Pelican by Sir Peter Parker, Collingwood reports (prematurely) that "Pensacola has fallen to the Spaniards - a settlement of very little importance ... to the wealth of Great Britain, and only of consequence being a port in the neighbourhood of the Spanish territory." Further, he reports his hope that "we shall soon see peace established in America" because the French as Hispaniola "upbraid the Americans with having drawn them into a ruinous war" while the Americans complain of the French "self interested views, and their want of faith - those recriminations must soon produce enmity where there never was a very sincere friendship."
