Note
"A Serjeant & party with a very considerable number of prisoners & deserters have just arrived .... I have granted the serjeant an order to draw three days provisions for them, but unfortunately he can get nothing but herrings & flour. The herrings ... are extremely bad, the poor fellows have no cash, therefore cannot purchase anything better."
"The party who have charge of the deserters are greatly fatigued; a little rum wou'd administer much to thier comfort."
"My officers & self ... lately on command at Philad[elphi]a have a party with our baggage in the same predicament .... I cou'd wish that they might likewise be supplied with a little rum & comfortable provisions."
Johnston was an original member of the Pennsylvania Society of the Cincinnati.
