Note
Bust, to left, in uniform. Oval, in frame, 6/16, of oak leaves, resting on a base, upon which are an American eagle, a cocked hat, a sword, inkstand, book, etc., in a rectangle ruled to represent an American flag. At top of frame is "E Plurbus Unum," and beneath, an open scroll containing facsimile signatures of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. The signature of Washington on this plate is trembling and the background of the oval is ruled horizontally and vertically at right angles. Stipple.

a second photographic copy of the engraving, enlarged and cropped, has been mounted on a decorative matboard and is without letters. It was originally accessioned as L1993.851. The engraving that is photographed has the background of the oval burnished out and ruled horizontally with slight cross-hatching around the shoulders. This verision is numbered 179b in Hart.
