Born in Delaware of recent Scotch-Irish immigrant parents, Macwhorter was an ardent patriot during the revolutionary war; sent to encourage colonial support by Scots in N.C. in 1775; crossed the Delaware with Washington; chaplain under Henry Knox at White Plains in 1778; refugee from Cornwallis in N.C.
